Thessaloniki is full of character, colour, and little surprises around every corner. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to pull out your camera or your phone and start capturing. We’ve gathered a collection of photos from four of our favourite spots in the city, each with its own story and charm. We’re keeping a few hidden gems to ourselves for now, but these locations are a great place to start exploring and if you snap something you love, we’d be thrilled if you shared it with us!
We’ve picked four locations, some classic favourites and some more low-key spots, perfect if you’re in the mood to wander beyond the city center and see a different side of Thessaloniki. So, enough talking for now. We’ll let the pictures do the rest!
The Old Port (Limani) is probably the best spot to rest after a lengthy walk in the city since it offers a magnificent view of the waterfront.
The remnants of the Old Port are still there, with the old railway tracks still visible and the warehouses renovated to host cultural events like the Thessaloniki Film Festival, galleries, as well as bars and restaurants.
Before settling down by the sea, take a moment to capture the atmosphere, especially at sunset. The cobblestone streets, old warehouses, and towering cranes create a setting unlike anywhere else in the city, full of texture, history, and light.
Ano Poli offers a different feel from the rest of the city. Here, the busy roads and towering apartment blocks give way to low-rise houses built in a traditional style, cobblestone streets, flights of stairs, and stunning views.
To kick off your photo adventure, we suggest starting at the Triangle Tower. From there, just let yourself wander. Getting lost in the narrow streets is part of the charm, each one has something special to offer, from charming balconies and picturesque corners to sweeping views of the Thermaikos Gulf and Mount Olympus in the distance.
And don’t forget to show some love to the cats roaming around Ano Poli, they add their own special charm to the neighbourhood.
The Umbrellas of Nea Paralia, as we’ve mentioned in a previous post, are understandably one of the most photographed spots in the city.
Just a short walk from Aristotelous Square and the White Tower, the area around the Umbrellas shifts with the seasons and the time of day. We’ve picked photos from different moments throughout the year so you can get a feel for the charm and energy of the place.
From rainy landscapes and sunny afternoons to evening strolls with popcorn stands lighting up the night, Nea Paralia and the Umbrellas never disappoint.
One of the more low-key spots on our list, the Fishermen’s Huts in Chalastra offer a peaceful escape just half an hour’s drive from the city. It’s a little off the beaten path but absolutely worth the short trip.
The huts are used by local fishermen to store their equipment, as the area is known for mussel farming. In recent years, the spot has caught the attention of both amateur and professional photographers, as well as curious explorers looking for something unique just outside Thessaloniki.
The huts sit within the Axios Delta National Park, home to rich flora and fauna. We highly recommend taking some time to explore the area. You might even spot the magnificent flamingos that roam the wetlands.
