If you ever find yourself strolling along Thessaloniki’s famous waterfront, you’ll spot two bulky, imposing buildings from afar, each strikingly different from the other. One is a brown brick structure, echoing Thessaloniki’s past, while the other is a modern building of white marble and glass, overlooking the sea.
This is where Thessaloniki’s beloved promenade finds its dramatic finish (or, for some, its inspiring start!). Whether you’re starting your walk from the east or winding down your day near the city center, the area around Megaro Mousikis offers a fresh sea breeze, panoramic views of the city and of Thermaikos Gulf, with a peaceful spot to relax by the sea. Find a bench nearby or sit by the wooden decks, let the sun set over the water, and you’ll see why this place is a favorite for locals and travelers alike.
The first building you’ll notice is the majestic M1. Built in the late 90s, it’s hard to miss with its grand stature and elegant design that subtly nods to Thessaloniki’s Byzantine roots, while also whispering hints of Central European influence. Inside, you’ll find a spacious concert hall and bustling foyers, but even from the outside, M1 stands as a reminder of the city’s rich history, bridging old and new in its own unique way.
Right next door, M2 is a total contrast and that’s what makes the pair so memorable. Designed by the renowned architect Arata Isozaki and finished in 2011, this building is all about clean geometric lines, glass, and metal. The sunlight pours in, bouncing off vast windows and filling the space with energy. M2 might not echo Thessaloniki’s past, but its modern simplicity holds its own, making it a symbol of the city’s creative future.
Even if you’re not there for a concert or event, the grounds around Megaro Mousikis are a joy to explore. Watch joggers glide by, families laughing along the waterfront, or friends catching up on a bench as ships drift by in the distance. As the sun dips behind the city, the whole area glows, making this one of the best sunset spots in Thessaloniki.
Bring a snack, grab a coffee from a nearby kiosk, and claim your seat for a sunset you won’t forget. And don’t forget your camera: the combo of city skyline, sea, and these two eye-catching buildings is seriously photogenic.
