There are places in every city that locals can’t imagine living without. In Θεσσαλονίκη, that place is Nea Paralia. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or you pass by it every day, this waterfront promenade always has something new to offer.

Life in Θεσσαλονίκη would be totally different without its unique promenade, the Nea Paralia. Often considered one of the largest and most impressive urban promenades in the Balkans, it spans nearly 5 km, connecting the Thessaloniki Concert Hall with the city’s landmark, the White Tower. It’s difficult to imagine a sunny day without enjoying a walk or a bicycle ride, a majestic sunset, or the view of the imposing Mount Olympus on a clear morning. Nea Paralia is undoubtedly an important part of the city’s identity.
The current form of the waterfront was redesigned by architects Nikiforidis and Cuomo, with the goal of transforming an underutilized coastal strip into a vibrant, accessible, and multifunctional public space. Construction began in phases in 2006, and the entire waterfront became fully accessible to the public in 2013.
Nea Paralia features 12 thematic gardens, each with its own character, making every entrance feel unique. We won’t spoil the surprises hidden in each garden (we want you to discover them yourself), but don’t miss the magical sunset views from the Garden of the Afternoon Sun. Along the way, you’ll come across elegant landscape design, public art by renowned Greek artists, and playgrounds for all ages, as well as public tennis and basketball courts for those looking to stay active.
Nea Paralia is the go-to spot for taking beautiful photos, in every kind of weather. Windy skies, soft sunsets, or clear mornings each bring out a different mood. With its mix of natural beauty and clean design, it’s the kind of place where even quick phone shots turn out special.
And while you’re out capturing the perfect shot, it’s easy to take a break and soak it all in. You can stop for a drink or a snack at one of the glass kiosks along the promenade or grab something tasty from a nearby food truck. It’s a simple way to enjoy the waterfront a little longer.
Nea Paralia isn’t just a route along the sea. It’s part of the rhythm of the city. Whether you’re there for a quiet moment, a lively stroll, or a scenic photo, you’ll find something that draws you back again and again.
