Exploring Volos: Beaches, Tsipouro and Culture in Greece's coastal gem

Volos is a magical place, and it’s not just us saying it, history agrees. Nestled at the foot of Mount Pelion, the legendary mountain of the Centaurs, and facing the Aegean Sea, Volos is a must-visit destination. In Greek mythology, the Centaurs were half-human, half-horse creatures known for their wild spirit, and their stories are still tied to this land. Mount Pelion itself adds to the charm with its stone-built villages and lush green slopes that spill down to the sea. Volos is where the mountain meets the water, a city surrounded by beauty and culture.

So, what should you do while you’re here? Let’s walk through halu’s picks.

Morning by the sea

Start your day with a coffee by the port and then head out for a swim. Just outside Volos, next to the well-known Afyssos beach, lies a hidden gem that only locals whisper about: Kallifteri.

Think green waters, soft white sand, endless blue horizons, and pine trees clinging to the cliffs. To get there, park by the road and follow the path down. On one side you’ll find a few beach bars, but overall it’s a peaceful, relaxing spot. And here’s a bonus: even in September, the water is still warm and perfect for a swim.

Afternoon with tsipouro

If there’s one thing Volos is famous for, it’s tsipouro. This is the city’s true staple, and you’ll find it almost everywhere. Almost all of the restaurants serve their own local tsipouro, so skip the bottled stuff and always go for the local pour. The best part? Every time you order a tsipouro, it comes with meze on the side at no extra cost. The more tsipouro you enjoy, the more delicious bites you’ll get. Volos locals wouldn’t dream of drinking anything else.

halu!’s choice: Skip the city center and head to Nea Ionia. One of the best spots is “Marina”, where you’ll enjoy fresh fish, seafood, and of course, plenty of tsipouro.

Exploring the industrial past of Volos in the evening

Volos isn’t just about food and sea. It’s also a city with deep roots and fascinating history. Among its many museums, one stands out: the Rooftile and Brickworks Museum of Volos, also known as the Tsalapata Museum. The indoors exhibition of the museum is temporarily closed but the outdoors area remains open with periodic exhibitions and events.

This open industrial space showcases the production of the city’s signature bricks and tiles, offering something truly different.

halu!’s choice: Catch the sunset in this old-school industrial setting. Have a drink at the small bars or the brewery housed within the space, and take a look at the art galleries nearby.
