Every autumn, Thessaloniki turns into a living movie set. Cafés fill with late-night debates about favorite screenings, queues form outside cinemas by the sea, and the city hums with the rhythm of film reels and storytelling. The Thessaloniki International Film Festival (TIFF) has long been one of Europe’s most beloved celebrations of cinema, and this year, for its 66th edition, the excitement feels bigger than ever.
From October 30 to November 9, Thessaloniki becomes a cinematic playground. A total of 278 films light up the city’s iconic venues like the Olympion and Pavlos Zannas theaters, as well as the port’s Frida Liappa, Tonia Marketaki, John Cassavetes, and Stavros Tornes. Add to that the Makedonikon theater and the Festival’s online platform, and you get a city completely immersed in film.
The lineup brings together international discoveries, bold new voices, and homegrown stories. From the International Competition to the experimental >>Film Forward and the late-night charm of ’Round Midnight, each section offers a glimpse into the best of contemporary cinema. The Open Horizons program and Special Screenings round out the experience with acclaimed titles from around the world and beloved filmmakers returning to Thessaloniki’s screens.

The 66th Thessaloniki International Film Festival celebrates the harmony between cinema and visual art. This year’s visual identity, designed by Greek artist Stefanos Rokos, captures the movement and emotion of storytelling through bold colors and dreamlike imagery. The festival’s trailers, directed by Fokion Xenos with music by Jim Sclavunos, carry that same creative rhythm, turning the idea of the festival itself into a work of art.
Beyond the screenings, TIFF explores the deeper language of storytelling through masterclasses, tributes, and exhibitions. Its central theme, “Plot Twist: Beyond the Sixth Sense,” reflects on the unexpected turns that reshape our understanding of a story and sometimes of ourselves. It reminds us that cinema is not only about what we see but about how it makes us feel.
The festival opened with Jim Jarmusch’s “Father Mother Sister Brother”, a film that recently won the Golden Lion in Venice, starring Indya Moore, one of TIME magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world. The closing film will be “HEN” by György Pálfi, a remarkable Greek co-production that first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. The screening will take place on November 9 and is open only to those with limited tickets and invitations.
