Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki: A Journey Through Macedonian History

Thessaloniki’s Archaeological Museum is one of the most important cultural stops in northern Greece. It holds more than 50,000 archaeological objects, making it one of the largest collections in the country. Housed in an iconic modernist building near the waterfront and the White Tower, the museum showcases the history of Macedonia from prehistory, through the rise of the Macedonian kingdom, to the founding of Θεσσαλονίκη and the later Roman era.

Archaeological Treasures of Prehistoric Macedonia

One of the first things to see in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki is the oldest human find on Greek soil: a cranial fossil dating back 250,000 to 300,000 years. Discovered in Halkidiki’s Petralona cave, it is a unique glimpse into the distant past.

The prehistoric Macedonia section highlights everyday life. Tools and artifacts reveal how people hunted, fished, farmed, and lived thousands of years ago. It is the perfect introduction to the museum’s story of human progress.

Macedonian Kingdom Highlights

The exhibition on the Macedonian Kingdom is one of the museum’s most impressive. It offers insights into political, social, and economic life, while also showcasing religion, literature, music, and daily habits.

Some of the most moving objects come from Macedonian tombs. Soldiers, actors, and citizens were buried with armor, weapons, and elaborately decorated pots created as burial offerings. These treasures, known as the Gold of Macedon, are among the highlights of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.

Discovering the History of Thessaloniki

The museum is also the best starting point to learn about the history of Θεσσαλονίκη itself. From its founding to its growth as one of the most important Roman cities, the exhibition guides you through fascinating details. You will discover how the city got its name (we will not spoil it here) and gain a deeper appreciation for the ancient monuments still visible in the city center. The Galerius complex, with the Arch of Galerius and the impressive Rotunda, is among the most important.

A real highlight is the mosaic floor with mythological scenes, taken from a private house in Θεσσαλονίκη. Dating from the 3rd century AD, it is remarkably well preserved and a favorite spot for many visitors

Outdoor Exhibition in the Museum Garden

When you finish exploring the permanent indoor galleries, do not miss the open-air exhibition in the museum garden. Here you will find stone monuments from the 1st to 7th century AD. The best part is that this section has free entry, making it a great option even if you do not have time for the full museum visit.
