27th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival

The 27th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival will take place from March 6 to 16, 2025, showcasing 261 documentaries from around the world. Alongside the main program, the festival features four competition sections, special screenings, an AI-focused tribute, and an exclusive masterclass and art installation exploring the intersection of technology and creativity.

A Cinematic Celebration in the Heart of Thessaloniki

Θεσσαλονίκη is a city with a strong cinematic identity, hosting two of Greece’s biggest film events: the Thessaloniki International Film Festival (TiFF) in November and the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival (TiDF) in March. TiDF returns from March 6 to 16, 2025, bringing a diverse selection of 261 documentaries from around the world to the big screen.

The festival takes place in key locations across the city center, making it easy for visitors to move between screenings. The Olympion complex at Aristotelous Square serves as the festival’s main hub, while additional screenings will be held at the Port of Thessaloniki’s theaters Frida Liapa, Tonia Marketaki, John Cassavetes, and Stavros Tornes and Makedonikon theater, near the White Tower.

A Diverse Lineup of Documentaries from Around the World

This year’s lineup features a wide range of premieres and thought-provoking films, covering contemporary social issues, democracy, freedom, and tolerance. A special tribute is dedicated to Artificial Intelligence (AI), exploring its role in today’s world. Alongside AI-focused films, an installation by UCLA professor Lauren Lee McCarthy will be presented at MOMus-Experimental Center for the Arts, while the AI and ART EXPERIENCE masterclass, powered by Telekom, will take place on March 9 at Pavlos Zannas Theater.

The festival showcases 38 international documentaries in competition across four sections: International Competition, Newcomers, >>Film Forward, and Immersive: All Around Cinema. It also highlights standout documentaries in Open Horizons, Top Docs, and NextGen sections. The Greek documentary scene is equally strong, with 71 Greek films, including 42 in the international program and 25 available online από March 7 to 21. Special screenings will include Mysterious Deaths in Ancient Greece: Olympias. Thirst for Power by COSMOTE TV and L’éclairage revient / Waves of Light, a collaboration between the Greek National Opera and the Public Power Corporation.
