Just 100 km from Thessaloniki lies a quiet and refreshing destination for anyone looking to get away from the pace of the city. Lake Kerkini, set between Mount Belles and Mavrovouni, offers a mix of nature, wildlife and slow travel at its best.
Lake Kerkini is considered one of Europe’s most important birdwatching locations, with over 300 bird species recorded in the area. Fifty of these are listed on Greece’s Red List of endangered species. Visitors might spot rare birds like the Dalmatian Pelican, the Pygmy Cormorant or birds of prey such as Bonelli’s Eagle and the Peregrine Falcon. Even if you’re not an expert, it’s worth bringing a pair of binoculars along. You never know what you’ll see.
After birdwatching, you can take a ride on a traditional wooden boat known as a plava and experience the lake from the water. If you’re lucky, you might also see the famous water buffalo that roam the area. This region is home to the largest population of free-roaming buffalo in Greece.
After a day outdoors, it’s likely you’ll have worked up an appetite. Luckily, the area offers excellent local cuisine. Choosing between fish and meat might be the hardest part. Fresh fish from the lake is served in nearby tavernas, often with a view of the water and a glass of local wine. If you prefer meat, try one of the many buffalo-based dishes. You’ll even find desserts made with rich buffalo milk.
Lake Kerkini is a great option for a day trip into the Greek countryside, combining peaceful landscapes, unique wildlife and great food. That’s why we’ve put together a day excursion that includes everything mentioned above. If you’re visiting Thessaloniki and have a free day, be sure to keep Lake Kerkini in mind.
