The buildings of Thessaloniki: Alegra Ergas Hall

Welcome to the first article in our series showcasing our favorite spots in Thessaloniki! In this series, we’ll explore everything Thessaloniki has to offer, from its remarkable architecture and fascinating stories to its incredible food scene. Today, we’re featuring one of our favourite apartments, Fandango by halu!, located in the iconic Alegra Ergas Hall.

After the catastrophic fire of 1917, the city of Thessaloniki entered a new era of reconstruction and city center replanning. During this period, various buildings of architectural interest were constructed, many of which remain standing today. Among them is the Alegra Ergas Hall, a five-story building notable for its distinctive dome.

The Alegra Ergas Hall was built in 1925 by architects Simeon Milonas and Efthymios Kotzamasoulis, who collaborated on other projects of the era. Designed to house the Jewish family of Alegra and Alberto Ergas, the building features eclectic architectural elements with perfect symmetry in its vertical and horizontal lines. At the time, building regulations limited heights to five stories, leading many families, including the Ergases, to add imposing domes that became characteristic of buildings from this period.

Today, the building includes an additional floor added later, and the dome has been reconstructed. Most floors remain residential, while the lower floors have previously served as spaces for local businesses. Venizelou Street complements this architectural gem with a mix of Ottoman-era structures like the Bezesteni Ottoman Market and the Hamza Bey Mosque, alongside more modern architecture. Nearby, the Venizelou Metro station reveals the ruins of Decumanus Maximus, one of the Roman Empire’s key boulevards.

With the recent restoration of the Alegra Ergas Hall in vibrant colors and the completion of the Thessaloniki Metro, the area has become one of the city’s most vibrant and interesting spots.

halu! invites you to explore the rich history of Alegra Ergas Hall and the iconic Venizelou Street by staying in a stunning 150 m² apartment within Alegra Ergas Hall.
