The Buildings of Thessaloniki: The White Tower and the Stories It Carries

In our series Buildings of Thessaloniki, we look at places that shaped the city in their own special way, whether they’re famous or not. And of course, we cannot skip the most recognizable landmark of all. The White Tower is the building you know even before you arrive in Thessaloniki. It appears on postcards, city logos and memories. But behind this familiar image lies a long and sometimes dark history. Let’s explore it together!

A Tower With a dark past

The White Tower was built in 1430 by the Ottomans, on top of an older Byzantine fortification at the edge of the city where the walls met the sea. During its early years, the tower had many names. The most shocking one was Tower of Blood, because it was used as a prison and a place where punishments were carried out. It was not the peaceful landmark we know today.

A New Name and a New Identity

In 1880, during the Ottoman reform period, the tower was painted white and given its current name. This act was probably meant to clean its reputation and give it a more positive image.
Painting the tower did not erase its past, but it changed how people saw it. From a place of fear, it slowly became a symbol of a new era.

Until 1911, the White Tower was connected to Thessaloniki’s eastern and sea walls. When these fortifications were demolished, the tower suddenly stood alone. This is when it began to look more like the building we recognize today.

After Thessaloniki’s liberation in 1912, the tower was used for many different purposes.
It has been a storage space, an air-defense center, a university laboratory, a sea scouts’ meeting place and even a cafeteria. It adapted to whatever the city needed at the time.

Today, it finally has a steady role.

A Museum of Thessaloniki Through Time and the View From the Top

Now, the White Tower works as a museum that presents the story of Thessaloniki from its founding in 316 BC until today. Inside, you can learn about the city’s architecture, everyday life and food traditions.

As you move from floor to floor, the tower shares different chapters of the city’s history. It is simple, clear and easy to follow, making it a good stop for visitors and locals who want to understand how Thessaloniki became what it is now.

Once you reach the rooftop, the whole city opens around you.
You can see the long waterfront, the old port, the sea and a complete 360-degree view of Thessaloniki. Many people say it is the best sea view in the city, and it is easy to understand why.

It’s the perfect moment to slow down and enjoy the fresh air.
