Thessaloniki in the summer is a city that slows down. Some stores close for the season, while many locals, especially at weekends, head to the nearby beaches of Epanomi or Halkidiki to escape the heat. The streets become quieter and the rhythms of the city feel a little more relaxed.
However, for those who stay in the city, there is one summer tradition that continues to bring people together: the Therino.
Therina, the Greek word for open air cinemas, are an essential part of summer in Greece. Locals visit them to escape the heat, enjoy a cold drink and watch old favourites or new releases beneath the night sky.
Over the years, the Therino has become part of the cultural identity of Greece and Thessaloniki. A summer cinema offers a completely different experience from a traditional movie theatre. It is perfect for a date, an evening with friends or simply a quiet escape from the city.
Wondering what to watch in Thessaloniki in the summer? Here are three of our favourite open air cinemas in Thessaloniki.
Hidden between busy apartment buildings, Therino Apollon feels like a small garden oasis. Trees, flowers and stone details surround the screen, creating an intimate setting that feels far removed from the streets outside.
Apollon is an ideal choice for film lovers. Its programme includes arthouse cinema, cult favourites and classic films from renowned directors such as Andrei Tarkovsky, Ingmar Bergman and Federico Fellini.
You can also order a drink while watching the film. Our suggestion is the Paloma cocktail, especially on a warm Thessaloniki evening.
halu’s choice: Watch the Greek romantic comedy classic Ftina Tsigara, or Cheap Smokes, which returns to Apollon on 15 August. The screening is particularly popular, so buying your ticket in advance is a good idea. The film is often shown with English subtitles, but we recommend contacting the cinema to confirm before booking.

Cine Ellinis is located beside the OTE Tower and the Thessaloniki International Fair grounds, right in the centre of the city.
The cinema is decorated with colours and details inspired by the Cycladic islands. Stepping inside feels a little like leaving Thessaloniki for a Greek island, even though you are still surrounded by some of the city’s most recognisable landmarks.
Ellinis mainly screens new releases and blockbuster films. Its kiosk also serves drinks, snacks, cocktails and hot dogs, making it an easy choice for a complete summer cinema night.
halu’s choice: There are not many places more fitting for watching Homer’s epic than Greece. This summer, we would choose Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, screened under the stars at Ellinis Summer Cinema.

At the beginning of Megalou Alexandrou Avenue, close to the Thessaloniki waterfront, you will find Therino Natali.
Its location makes it one of the easiest summer cinemas to combine with an evening walk along the seafront. You can watch a blockbuster under the stars and then continue your night beside the water.
Natali also has a garden atmosphere that separates it from the busy avenue outside. While you are there, try one of the cinema’s hot dogs.
halu’s choice: One of the biggest releases of summer 2026 is Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Watching it outdoors at Natali adds something special to the classic blockbuster experience, especially with the Thessaloniki waterfront only a few steps away. The film is included in Natali’s current programme.

A summer evening in Thessaloniki does not always have to mean leaving the city for the beach. Sometimes, all you need is a cold drink, a good film and a seat beneath the stars.
From arthouse European films and Greek cult classics to the latest summer blockbusters, Therina in Thessaloniki offer a uniquely local way to experience the city after dark.
Choose your film, arrive a little before the screening and enjoy one of Thessaloniki’s most beloved summer traditions.
